How does one change windows media player so that it shows the movie and doesn't just play the sound?

I'm trying to play an AVI file and all I can get is the sound to come out and the player screen is black. How do I get it to play properly?How does one change windows media player so that it shows the movie and doesn't just play the sound?
it happened to me, my mate burned me a disc and i tried to play it but i just got audio and like a wierd twisty thing so i converted the file into MPEG. go on www.download.com and download something called ';psp video 9'; its converts it into mpeg file so you can play it on quicktime or w.e
